The Scottish Society for Northern Studies explores the inter-relationships between the Scandinavian, Celtic and Scottish cultures through a variety of historical media and scholarly research. The Society was founded in 1968 and has since provided both a forum and a community for specialists and enthusiasts of a wide breadth of disciplines to pursue their common ‘northern’ interests. Through seminars, conferences and publications, the SSNS seeks to encourage further exploration, research and scholarship across Scotland and beyond. The Society is a long-term supporter of NRN.
The Scottish Archaeological Research Framework (ScARF) is designed to showcase current archaeological research in Scotland and highlight research recommendations for the future. The ScARF Student Network is designed to encourage collaboration within the student community working in Scotland, to help students gain experience presenting at conferences and to encourage the sharing of student research through the ScARF website. This will help to keep the framework relevant but will also mean that students get credit and publicity for the work that they are adding to the bigger picture of Scotland’s archaeology. These bursaries have been made available to help students attend events they might not otherwise be able to. The criteria for judging applications are based on these aims, and so students who are able to show that their work can add something to ScARF (whether in the form of a short piece of text or as a poster in the upcoming poster gallery) will be judged favourably. These criteria also mean that we can only accept applications from students whose work has a Scottish component to it. Further information can be found and applications made through the Society of Antiquaries website. The deadline for applications is Friday the 15th April 2016.
the organising committee are also very grateful to the University of Glasgow for granting a Collaborative Research Award in support of NRN2016 Glasgow, and to university staff for providing advice and logistical support.
